mod_expires gotcha

This is for those who simply google for mod_expires and try to add those settings that you find in apache's web site and/or in other websites to your httpd.conf and wondering why some of your mime-types don't have their max-age attribute still NOT set:

for eg, you might have entries like the following in your httpd.conf for javascript but your .js files might still have not been cached by the browser (or max-age is set to zero).

ExpiresByType text/javascript "access plus 1 days"
ExpiresByType application/x-javascript "access plus 1 days"

The reason is you haven't specified the right mime-type that you have set it in your apache's mime.types file. For javascript you would've probably have:

application/javascript js

So fix your httpd.conf to use the right mime-type that is set in apache's conf/mime.types file.

By the way, with the LiveHeader plugin or Yslow plugin, FireFox is a nice and easy way to check if mod_expires (or mod_deflate for that matter) is in action.

7/11 – Mumbai Blasts

Mumbai, one of the entrenched, densely populated city in India was mourning the death of hundreds. Series of bomb blasts in local suburban trains during peak hours rocked the commercial city of India.

Hundreds of innocent people took the train as usual not knowing that today they themselves were inviting death. Few were lucky enough to survive with injuries. But the dreadful memories of nearing the death would persist in their minds forever.

Who are the barbaric people behind such acts? What do they achieve in doing such brutal things? Do they sit and laugh and celebrate over their victory? Are they born with all hatred in their minds and brains? What pleasure do they derive in harming fellow humans. Did these innocent lives hurt them by any means? Let them know that their sins would punish them someday.

On one hand, when hundreds are grieving the death of their loved ones and praying for the well being of seriously injured, on the other hand our politicians ignite the enragement by criticizing opposite parties. They are opportunistic and never bother to look around for solutions. Except the politicians, nobody cares whether the organization behind such inhuman acts consists of Hindus or Muslims or the hand of opposite political party. All we care is punish whoever is against the survival of human race.
There were several Muslims and Hindus who were wounded in the blasts; they hardly knew the religion of the person who saved them. So never blame a religion/caste/community/nationality for what happened on this black Tuesday.

Amidst such chaotic situation Mumbai is resilient again. She stands tall and keeps her Wheels turning. Well she has to, for she has given lives to thousands of rich, poor and stranded.
Kudos to Mumbaikars who did a great job in the rescue operations and saved uknown lives!!!

Laptop on fire

I've been thinking of the possibility of laptops and computers exploding in the middle of your work but not heard of any such incidents and was feeling safe (!!?) thus far.

Someone from Japan reporting (with pictures) a (dell) laptop exploding in a conference, today. Aint safe using those puppys anymore, huh?

One laptop per child

Happened to see the images of MIT's 100$ laptops. MIT's 'one laptop per child' research project is in the process of developing 100$ laptops for children across the world. Looks like the project is almost complete and we can sign up now for a pledge to buy them for 300$ so that 2 of them will go to the children for free.

The amazing thing about these laptops is their configuration:

o/s: special version of fedora linux
processor speed: 500 MHZ
RAM: 1GB (Yep..!!!!)
4 USB ports
Built-in wireless support.

Kudos to the team and the sponsors (Google, Nortel, AMD, RedHat etc).

email is the medium of choice

சொல்றது யாரு - பில் கேட்ஸ்!.

At Microsoft, e-mail is the medium of choice, more than phone calls, documents, blogs, bulletin boards, or even meetings (voicemails and faxes are actually integrated into our e-mail in-boxes).

ஆஃபிஸ்ல அப்படி அவர் என்னத்தைத் தான் பண்றார்ன்னு அவரே சொல்றார். Pretty interesting.

And came across another interesting article about emaill and its 'arumai-permais'. Good one. Email is indeed a simple but powerful media.

சரி, இது தெரியுமா? Google தயவால, SFO is going to be a free wireless city.
